Light and darkness.

The house seemed to be quite vacant, no lights on inside, no one outside the house, the police had collected all the evidence they could find

A cold breeze was starting up, not unnatural as it was fall

Rema stayed staring at the screen, even after the story was done and there were commercials, she just stared blankly with a small sigh

Inside the back door was a somewhat messy looking kitchen, crowded with a table with 7 chairs, and in the corner, a couple high chairs stacked up.

In a nearby room was a crowded living room, stuffed with furniture for several people, and some stairs that led up to the bedrooms

Rema slowly stood, and went to the kitchen to get a drink, and she glanced at the door to the basement, knowing Kal had left, she inched a bit closer

Rema ran her fingers over the symbols, her eyes narrowing a bit, until she slowly reached towards the chains, and began to try and find if she could take them down

Up the stairs were 4 doorways. 3 to bedrooms, one to a bathroom.

One bedroom was small, with just a single bed, looking quite plain, another had 3 beds, looking like a childrens room, and the one furthest down the hall had 3 beds as well, but looked to be for Rema and her 2 sisters. One side of the room had posters of several good looking men posing in suits, while the other side had several posters of different rock bands.

Remas bed looked a bit messy, the other 2 beds looked generally neat.

She looked at the chains, the lock, and sighed slightly, but then she saw the key, and reached out.

Hesitating at first, she wasnt sure if he would strongly dissagree, wasnt sure if she should open it at all.

Slowly she lowered her hand, shaking her head. Something bad happened down there and he had put so much work into not letting anything happen again, or come out.

She walked back to the couch and layed down

On the beds, under the sheets, there seemed to be a single burn mark, almost looking like it was from a cigarette, even though it didnt smell like one, it smelled more like plain sulfur.

Once Kalbert found nothing by just looking, he slowly started to move some things around. The very last place he looked was the beds, knowing he'd have to be extremely careful to put them back as they were when he was done.

It seemed like hours had passed when he finally found the burn marks. He almost passed it up altogether, but he had touched the mark and smelled his finger. He smelled the sulfur and his eyes went wide.

Most likely the police had missed the marks altogether. He looked around the room once without moving to see if he spotted any other marks...then looked back tot he original and pulled out his digital camera and took pictures of it, and the whole room itself.

Once he finished with the digital camera, he pulled out an old 35 mm camera and took the same pictures. He knew he couldn't be gone all day so he tried to hurry.

Another hour passed and he had the pictures he wanted and put everything back in it's place. By the door he had set two things. A video camera to record the room as he worked, and a digital voice recorder, both of which he turned off and stuffed into his bag before making his way downstairs and hopefully out of the house without getting caught.

As time went on and Kalbert didn't come home, the basement door didn't change much, not that a door would. The candles however, were put out by a small breeze that came through the house despite no window people open...and was preceded by a small tapping noise coming from the door.

As she heard the tapping, she jumped, the slight noise in the silence of the house taking her off guard. She looked around confused, and slowly stood up

"Kal?"

She swore she heard the noise from kitchen, and walked over, seeing the candles blown out, her eyes narrowed a bit

"Kal this isnt funny.."

She tilted her head a bit

"Whats it to you?"

She didnt know who this man was, and from how Kal had been acting, she assumed he rarely had someone over.

"You'll have to come back another time"

The man frowned and looked into the house behind Rema but didn't make a move to go inside. His eyes didn't change their expression, but their color did seem to change a bit from blue to grey to green again. He said nothing for a moment then shrugged.

"Rude lil one aintcha?"

He chuckled but bowed his head very politely.

"Thanks anyway"

Without saying anything else, he turned and walked down the street, his duster blowing in the wind.

Rema shook her head and closed the door, locking it, and looking back towards the kitchen, and walked back over, to the door, and sat down in front of it, crossing her legs, staring at it, as if it would open at any moment.

"Whats down there.."

She muttered to herself, not daring to touch the door after hearing the tapping

Kalbert left the house after making sure he didn't disturbed anything. He closed the backdoor as quietly as he could and crept away from the house, keeping a careful eye on anyone passing by.

Soon enough he was away from the house and jogging to the school. Half an hour passed and he got his, and Rema's assignments and assured the principal Rema was doing alright and that he'd look after her until she wanted to go home.

He hurried home and it was getting to be late afternoon by then. No more noises or anything weird came from the door, though Rema might have noticed some of the symbols changed a little as the front door suddenly opened and Kalbert came in and locked it behind him then looked around.

"Rema...? Are you still here...?"

She jumped as she heard him come in, and quickly stood, brushing herself off

"Y-Yeah! Im here.."

She shook her head, thinking that the changes of the symbols were in her head, and quickly walked to the front door

"Someone.. came by here."

She wanst going to mention the tapping at the door, just incase it was her imagination

Coming into the living room, Kalbert set his bag down behind the couch and tried to push it a little further so Rema wouldn't think to ask about it, since it held all of his gear and looked quite full.

He tilted his head slightly and looked confused.

"Someone? Like...from the police?"

He thought maybe someone had come looking for her to check in on her. Which he thought was a little weird no one had yet, but he figured since she called her Mother they wouldn't need too.

She shook her head

"No he.. Its hard to explain but he deffinetly wasnt with the cops.."

She shook her head a bit, glancing from time to time at the door, as if waiting for the noise to start again

"He asked for you.. said he'd come back later.."

Kalbert looked at her a little confused and caught how she kept looking over at the door and made his way into the kitchen to look at it. He blinked when he found the candles unlit and without even asking if something happened went into the cupboard and got his lighter and set about relighting them.

He also accused Rema of doing something, but as quickly as he thought to do it, he dismissed it and scolded himself mentally for even thinking about it. If it was someone else...maybe but Rema wouldn't have. He seemed to relax once the candles were lit and he looked at her.

"Did anything weird happen while those were unlit? Did that person come in here and touch anything?"

Rema shook her head

"He didnt touch anything.. and.. uhm.."

She looked to the door quite nervously

"there was..tapping.. on the door.."

Kalbert paled slightly and as soon as he registered exactly what she said, he stepped back from the door and bumped into the kitchen table.

"U-uh...w-well...Squirrels...o-or a cat must have gotten down there..."

He swallowed a little and stared at the door still but spoke a little quieter.

"I brought...our homework we should...uhm...do it..."

She saw how nervous he suddenly got, and her eyes narrowed

"Kal.. Whats down there.."

She looked towards the door as well, before looking back at him

"If you'd prefer I can just check for myself"

"No! If you go down there you might not come back!"

He looked at her with fear and sadness.

"Please...just...stay away from the door...a-and don't ask..."

He looked back to the door with heartache and fear etched all over his face.

"T-the spirits that are down there are too horrible to describe..."

He turned away from her and just leaned forward onto the kitchen table.
