Rid heard the scream, she had felt something happening but her mind was so set on the storm. She yelled to Devon

"Take the wheel!"

And rushed along the swaying boat to the stair well, and rushed down, looking on the first level, then she got down towards her cabin, shoving open the door, trying to see what had happened

The usually crazy man ran up to the wheel and grabbed it as another wave lurched the ship. He knew exactly what was going on. He had seen in months ago, and he knew his part in it all. The appearance of the map was unexpected but it couldn't change anything. Not now... The time was coming...

The shadow was holding Mikal's now limp body as Ridell burst into the cabin. It looked vaguely shaped like a person but the swirling darkness and shadow made it impossible to tell what it could truly be.

At the sight of Ridell, it dropped Mikal's body to the floor and faced her. It seemed to study her for several heartbeats and from deep within the shadow there seemed to be two yellow slits...but then it was gone. vanished as if it had never been there at all. Mikal lay on the floor still as the night.

Rid stared blankly at the figure, unsure of what to make of it, but something.. something kept her generally calm, until it dissapeared and Mikal fell. She rushed down to the ground, pulling him up a bit

"Hey! Wake up!"

She boat was still rocking roughly, and she knew she would need the help of another captain in it all

Mikal didn't stir. There was blood seeping from what appeared to be a cut from the corner of his mouth and another deeper cut along his neck that wasn't bleeding at all. His breathing was shallow and he gurgles a little in each breath, as if the scream had caused his throat to bleed badly.

Rid quickly reached to her belt, pulling out a vial to numb his throat again, pouring some into his mouth as she tried to stay calm. She felt tears in her eyes, but still her face stayed serious, rubbing his throat, trying to get him to swallow it.

"You're not going to die on me.."

She was unsure of what to do, of what the figure was, what he did to him.

Mikal started to breath a little better and the numbing in his throat caused him to swallow the liquid normally, but still he did not waken. His heart beat very slowly with an irregular pulse as his face continued to stay pale. The old man's wounds started bleeding again, his blood dripping slowly from his neck onto the floor, but something smelled odd about it...not right...not as it did before...

Rid felt so helpless, staring at him, trying to figure out a potion, an elixir, something that may help. She hugged him closely with her eyes closed tightly

"Come on.. Wake up.."

She then thought of one way to save him.. to turn him. But she wasnt sure, didnt know if he would just prefer to die then to be turned.

She was wasting precious time trying to decide, but she just wasnt sure what to do

Unknown to Ridell, the darkness hadn't left the room but stayed hidden watching what she would do and how she would try to save him. The darkness watched her fast as she thought of what to do and it seemed to grow darker as it saw the final thought in her mind.

The heart in Mikal's chest started to beat slower again, getting so close to death. the darkness seemed to heave a great sigh, as all at once the oceans seemed to stop it's relentless attack on the ship, and Mikal's heart started beating normally and his eyes slowly opened, looking up at Ridell confused, and painfully.

Rid felt his heart start to beat normally again, and she looked down at him, letting out a sigh of relief. She pulled him up onto the bed, laying him down, just now realizing that they seemed to hit calm waters.

She walked over to her cabinet, mixing a few herbs and liquids, before walking back over, and pouring it into his mouth, something to force him to sleep at least for a few hours

"Rest.."

She stayed staring down at him, making sure it would take effect

The man weakly looked around after Ridell set him in the bed and she went to work with her potions. something was very wrong with him but he didn't know what. He was so weak...so tired. Everything seemed slow as he tasted a new potion slip past his lips.

It didn't seem to do anything until Mikal heard a soft voice tell him to rest and almost obediently he fell asleep.

Devon appeared in the open doorway and looked around the room swiftly.

"Oh good, he's passed out...I mean...Captain! Oh no! What happened!?"

Rid looked at Devon with a small glare at his first comment

"Im not sure.. "

She then walked over towards the doorway, ushering him out

"Keep going towards our destination, he needs his rest.."

And she closed the door, leaning against it, before looking over her shoulder at Mikal, confused as to what she saw, what the darkness was

Devon blinked as the door was shut in his face,but he grinned all the same. He turned and walked back up on deck, ordering some lout who looked the least injured and pointed him in the right direction. He then went back below...far below to the cargo hold.

He looked around but he knew it was there.

"Everything is going as planned. Just as you wished it. Just as I promised. You best keep your end of our deal...or so help me everyone will survive this trip..."

He didn't wait for a reply, he went back up on deck to keep the crew moving.

All the while, Mikal just rested silently on Ridell's bed. He didn't dream or have any nightmares. He just rested, almost peacefully.

Rid kneeled down beside the bed, resting her head on it, now realizing how tired she was. She fell asleep for a couple hours, and when she did wake up, looked at Mikal, moving her hand to his wrist to feel his pulse, even though she could hear all the pulses of everyone on deck.

She then pulled out another vial, tipping it into his mouth to numb his throat again, knowing the other one would be wearing off soon and he should be waking up.

She then made her way up to the deck, to find Devon and see where they were

Mikal woke with a start and looked around the room. He slowly sat up and tried to remember what happen. He remembered the storm...Ridell disappearing and the fear she was lost...then she was standing next to him, then...nothing.

He held his head which was pounding loudly with pain. His hearing seemed to scream out in the same pain but he started to hear a voice...a soft gentle voice that told him to go up on deck. As if the voice was his command he got up and did so, appearing on the deck slowly, looking around.

Devon waved Ridell over so she couldn't see Mikal following after her and began talking to her.

"We're getting close, the crew will get worse now...but we'll see the spires of rock soon..."

Rid walked over to Devon and nodded a bit, rubbing her eyes

"Alright.. I'll do my best to keep an eye on them.."

She looked quite worn down, her skin going back to abnormally pale

"I dont know whats been happening.. but.. we just need to push through I suppose.."

Devon nodded and turned to find Mikal standing behind him. Mikal's eyes seemed lifeless. Between the short distance to walk from the stairs to the wheel something changed deeply inside of the older man. His hands shot out like canon fire and moved around Devon's neck. The younger man coughed and sputtered as the life was being strangled out of him.

"What are you doing!"

She wasnt sure if Mikal was being afflicted by what Devon was talking about, but she grabbed his hands, trying to get them from around devons neck

"Stop it..!"

Mikal was lost to whatever controlled him. His arms and hands impossibly strong, even against Ridell. Devon too grabbed his hands trying to pull them from his neck but there wasn't anyone strong enough. Devon's face turned red...then blue...and his eyes rolled up in his head. His heart beat slower...and slower...then stopped altogether.

Once the life was gone from Devon's body Mikal let go...and they both fell to the deck. Devon's last thought was how he was betrayed and how no one was going to survive the Dead water.

Mikal stayed silent for a long moment, unconscious before he opened his eyes. -His- eyes and looked up at Ridell and mouthed the words "What happened?"

Rid was backed up against the railing, with tears in her eyes as she stared at him, then looked to Devon, who was laying dead on the deck.

She bit her lip, unsure of what to do. Not sure if he was corrupted.

She backed slowly down the steps, and closed her eyes tightly

"bring him down to the hold.."

She said painfully, as several of the crewmen grabbed Mikals arms, and walked him below deck

The strength Mikal had just had was gone, he worked his mouth in confused protest as he looked at Ridell, trying to understand. Then he noticed Devon's lifeless body and his eyes grew wide. Had he done that? Why did he do that? How could he?

He couldn't stop the crewman from dragging him away as he looked helplessly and miserably to Ridell until he was gone from the deck. He tried futilely to remember what happened as he was shoved roughly into a cell next to the mad who had gone insane.

Mikal crawled into the corner away from the other man's cage and just started weeping. It was too much...the Nightmare...the shadow...now killing Devon...it was worse than what happened that night. So much worse...

Rid looked at Devon, still with tears in her eyes, not at his death. She could care less about him, especially with how he acted, but with the fact Mikal did it. About 3 crewmen were left on deck, looking exhausted after the storm from earlier

"Toss him overboard.."

They nodded, picking up the lifeless body, and dumping it over the railing. She sighed deeply, and slid to her knees, her hands moving over her face as tears stung her eyes.

She was losing her incentive, her determination, it was fading, and quickly

The sun slowly started to appear on the horizon. They had sailed most of the night in the storm, but just before the light of the new day hit the ship, a hand settled on Ridell's shoulder. The touch was light and gentle. there was a slight smell on the air of rum, sweat and something...sweet.

But the sun cast it's light on the ship and the touch melted away but not before a soft and ghostly voice whispered her name.

below decks, the crazed man was furiously trying to get Mikal until the sun hit the ship and poured into the porthole. One it hit him, he calmed down and slumped over into sleep. Mikal however just continued to weep, sounding pathetic as his sobs were soundless.

Rid quickly looked over her shoulder, looking around, her senses picking up the smells, but nothing else of someone actually being there.

She took several deep breaths, trying to calm down, looking around at the tired crew, and she called out

"Go rest.."

She went up to the wheel as they went below deck, as the air dried the tears in her eyes, and she continued forward

As the ship pressed onward, cutting through the waves nothing much seemed to change for the first hour besides the position of the sun in the sky and the color of the sea. It seemed to be getting darker and greener the further the ship sailed on.

On the second hour, far off in the distance, dark black clouds seemed to be forming, but oddly never moving. According to the plot Devon had left in Ridell's cabin the clouds meant they were only a few more hours away and should be ready for the worst.

Down in the cells of the ship, the crazed man was still sleeping peacefully as if nothing had ever bothered him. Mikal however was acting very different. He paced his cell,his tears too were dried on his face. His mouth worked furiously as he talked to himself, going over again and again what he remembered but he was no closer to figuring it out.

At once point one of the crewmen walked by and he desperately tried to tell him to get Ridell, to let him talk to her, but the crewmen simply ignored him and kept walking.

Rid saw that one of the crewmen wasnt going below deck to rest, instead, he went up to her, so that instead she could rest.

She nodded to him, and walked below deck, stopping just outside the door where Mikal was held. She stared at it for several minutes, before pushing open the door, and looking inside to see him.

As before, she wasnt sure if he was sane, if he had been turned somehow, or what that shadow had done to him.

She then walked in, and up to his cell, putting her hands on the bars

"Why did you kill Devon.."
